Gray's Ferry Fire, Medicaid Protesters March, Garcia-Joanis Corruption Charges

Dark smoke from a trash fire billowed over Southwest Philadelphia late Tuesday afternoon. The fire broke out at about 4 p.m. at the junk yard along Gray's Ferry Avenue and South Hanson Street. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Grassroots groups are turning up the heat on Pennsylvania governor Tom Corbett, demanding that he accept federal Medicaid expansion under Obamacare. This afternoon, protesters marched near the clothespin sculpture at 15th and Market Streets. Behind them was a clothesline pinned with the photos of dozens of Pennsylvania’s uninsured. The governor has not indicated when he will make a final decision on Medicaid.

New charges have been filed against one allegedly corrupt Philadelphia cop, and an alleged partner in crime has also been charged. This is another blow to the Philadelphia Police Department, already reeling from repeated allegations of corruption, acts of admitted corruption, and concerns about police shootings. Jonathan Garcia was arrested last year on charges he was not just a cop but also a heroin dealer, allegedly while in uniform and working out of his patrol car. Now, a second officer — Sydemy Joanis — has been charged, the indictment unsealed today charging both Joanis and Garcia with setting up and robbing drug dealers while on the job, using actual and threatened force. This afternoon, Philadelphia police commissioner Charles Ramsey called it a sad day for the department — but also, in a sense, a good day.
