A Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer was shot and killed Thursday night while investigating a disturbance on the campus of the university in Cambridge, MA across the Charles River from Boston. Shots were fired at around 10:48 p.m. ET and the situation remained very active and fluid into early on Friday as authorities still searched for a suspect. No arrests have been made in the area of MIT. As of 2 a.m. MIT police say that the shooting suspect is no longer on campus and it is safe to resume campus activities with caution.

At around the same time violence broke out in Watertown, MA a few miles away. There were reports of heavy police/SWAT presence, gunfire, and multiple explosions. Two shooters, young men in jackets, engaged heavy gunfire with dozens of police and were able to detonate some sort of explosives. One of the shooters was apprehended during the battle and the other is currently at large after escaping in a bullet riddled SUV. Multiple agencies are on hand in Watertown, Mass. handling the situation.

Officials are not jumping to relate these two incidents or these to the bombing at the Marathon on Monday quite yet.

UPDATE: The entire city of Boston is on lockdown as authorities look for the other suspect. Everyone is asked to remain inside and transit is shutdown. They are now linking the MIT shooting to the violence in Watertown and calling these two suspects the ones sought for the Marathon Bombing.

26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev was captured by police. He has died overnight as a result of gunfire and blast wounds in Watertown. The surviving suspect has been identified as his brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. He is currently at large They have lived legally in the United States for over 10 years.

UPDATE 8:45pm 4/19: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is alive and in custody. The second suspect has been apprehended in Watertown, MA.
