Senate Rejects Toomey Background Chk Bill; Strong Lead In Boston Bombing; Ricin Letter Sent to Obama

The US Senate has rejected a bill sponsored by Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) and Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.). 60 votes were needed to advance the bipartisan measure, however there were only 54 "yes" votes to 46 "no". The Senate was voting on the specific amendment to a larger gun control bill that would have expanded background checks on gun purchases to include those at gun shows and internet sales. The checks would not have been required for private guns sales. Thursday, the Senate will vote on proposed bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Investigators have been pouring over thousands of images since the bombing in Boston at the Marathon on Monday. They have found an image with a potential suspect carrying a black bag and dropping it near the bomb location. They do not yet know his name, but they have a picture. The pictures and video are "strong leads" for authorities. There were reports of an arrest earlier this afternoon, but they were premature, no one is in custody. The image was taken from surveillance video at the Lord & Taylor department store. FBI still is asking for more information, pictures, and videos from the public to help supplement the investigation.

A letter addressed to President Obama preliminarily tested positive for poisonous ricin on Wednesday. A similarly laced letter was discovered on Tuesday addressed to Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss. Both letters were postmarked April 8th, before the Marathon Bombings, and in Memphis, TN. They each read: â€œTo see a wrong and not expose it, is to become a silent partner to its continuance.â€ Both are signed, â€œI am KC and I approve this message.â€ They were processed in off-site mailing facilities where the preliminary screening flagged them for ricin, a deadly poison derived from castor beans. Capitol Hill will be on special alert for suspicious mail and packages as the investigation continues.

UPDATE: An arrest has been made in the ricin letter case. The person was arrested in the Tupelo, Mississippi, area. FBI Special Agent in Charge Daniel McMullen said the man was arrested Wednesday. The FBI identified the suspect as Paul Kevin Curtis, 45, of Corinth, Miss.
