3 Teens Shot, 1 Dead near Overbrook High; KAWS statue at 30th Street; FEMA Sandy Deadline May 1st

Three teenagers were shot this afternoon near Overbrook High School at Tustin Playground at 59th Street and Lancaster Avenue. The incident happened at around 3:45 pm on Thursday. A group of teenagers gathered around a fistfight at the playground when two people pulled out guns and started shooting. The baseball team was practicing at a nearby field when the gunfire erupted and students in after school programs at Overbrook were locked down for 90 minutes. A 17-year-old Overbrook High School student was shot in the chest and arm. He was found by a Good Samaritan and driven to Lankenau Medical Center. He later died. A 16-year-old victim was shot in the buttocks and was found outside a pizza shop and taken to UPenn. The third person shot was a 19-year-old with a gunshot wound to the back. Police believe that he was one of the shooters. They also have a 20-year-old man in custody thought to be the second gunman. Witnesses were able to help police in identifying the gunmen.

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Amtrak have teamed up to bring Brooklyn-based artist KAWS' 16-foot-tall pop art sculpture Companion (Passing Through) to 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. The fiberglass and steel sculpture appeared today April 11 and will remain until May 14th. KAWS aka Brian Donnelly's work is a reimagining of Mickey Mouse as a skull and crossbones and has appeared in Hong Kong, New York, and Atlanta. This fall, PAFA will display several of KAWS' works in their collection of 19th-century American art as well as unveil a new commisioned piece to be displayed on the faÃ§ade above the front door.

Officials have announced that the last day for Superstorm Sandy survivors to register for FEMA disaster assistance in May 1, 2013.
FEMA officials released the following facts to help those in need understand FEMA assistance:

- FEMA assistance does NOT affect benefits from other federal programs, such as Social Security benefits, taxes, food stamps or Medicaid.

- FEMA assistance is available for renters; it is not exclusive to homeowners.

- FEMA provides grants; it does not make loans. These grants do NOT have to be repaid, and they are NOT considered taxable income.

- You may be eligible for reimbursement for repairs to your home, even if the repairs are already completed.

- You may be eligible for FEMA assistance even if you have flood or homeownerâ€™s insurance.

- Income is NOT a consideration for eligibility for FEMA assistance.

- A grant you may receive does not take away from another survivorâ€™s assistance; FEMA has sufficient funding to assist all eligible survivors with their eligible disaster-related needs.

- There is no paperwork to register with FEMA; the process normally takes between 15 and 20 minutes.

Officials say if you are unsure if you qualify for assistance, call 1-800-621-3362 (FEMA) or go to www.disasterassistance.gov.

May 1st is the last day to register for FEMA and apply for SBA physical damage disaster assistance which can cover expenses for repairs, replacement of damaged personal property, temporary housing and other disaster related needs like medical or transportation costs.
