29th Philadelphia International Cycling Championship has been canceled for 2013

It was announced today that the 29th Philadelphia International Cycling Championship will not be held in 2013, originally scheduled for June 2. Race organizers hope to bring the race back in 2014.

"We are disappointed that we must remove the race from the calendar in 2013, but we feel that we will be able to reorganize with new partners and make this the preeminent event the region deserves in 2014 and beyond,â€ said event creator David Chauner. â€œThe race is more than just about cycling; it reflects the spirit and passion of our region through all that have been involved and we are very excited that this adjustment in the calendar will make it even bigger than ever before and sustainable for years to come."

This is the longest running cycling event in the country and has been highly regarded in the cycling world during it's run. It was first introduced in 1985 as the CoreStates USPRO Championship and was the official national road racing championship for two decades. It's course took riders through Fairmount Park, along Kelly Drive, down Benjamin Parkway and Lemon Hill, and around a loop that would send riders through the streets of Manayunk and up the steep â€œWallâ€ multiple times. The course used to be 156 miles, but last year it was shortened to 124 miles. Last year also saw an amateur race added for those who wanted to try and tackle the course and try their might against the Manayunk Wall.

The was a premiere event in the city every spring, bringing national attention, tourism, and of course the race parties along the course in Manayunk and East Falls. Philadelphia is a cycling city with many who use the Schuylkill River Trail to train. The casual biker and the transportation cyclist also has seen the city expand bike lanes, pass share the road laws, and propose a bike share program. Hopefully they can restore the city's preeminent international cycling event for June 2014.
