Charges Dropped against Punched Woman; Philly ATV Law Approved; Williams Execution Halted

The District Attorney's office said today that they will drop charges against Aida Guzman, the woman punched by Philadelphia Lt. Jonathan Josey last weekend. Guzman, 39, was cited for disorderly conduct after police thought she threw some kind of liquid at them during a street celebration following the Puerto Rican Day parade. Josey was caught on camera punching Guzman and knocking her to the ground before making the arrest. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey announced later today that Lt. Josey, a decorated 19-year veteran of the force and the commanding officer on the scene at the parade, will be put on 30-day suspension with the intent to dismiss Thursday.

A City Council committee today approved the mayor's plan to impose stiff penalties for riding ATV's and dirtbikes in the city, on sidewalks, and in city parks. After a hearing of more than 3 hours today where supporters and opponents packed chambers and voiced opinions, the committee voted to approve the bill that will place $2,000 fines and possible forfeiture for first time offenders. Supporters complained about the noise, property damage, and obvious saftey concerns of having ATV's riding on streets, sidewalks, and parks. Opponents called for a legal place to recreate with their vehicles. The bill will now go to the full City Council.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority said today that it will turn on three more intersection red light cameras in Northeast Philadelphia within two months. The 60-day warning period was announced on the PPA's Facebook page.
The cameras will be turned on at:
- Knights and Woodhaven Roads
- Grant Ave. and Academy Rd.
-Bustleton Ave. and Byberry Rd.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court denied prosecutor's emergency petition to appeal the death penalty ruling against Terrance Williams. On Friday, Judge Teresa Sarmina vacated his sentence and issued a stay of execution after she found that prosecutors withheld evidence in his sentencing hearing. That evidence could have been crucial in determining the proper sentence for Williams. She ordered a new sentencing hearing. The Supreme Court's decision this afternoon to drop the prosecutor's appeal will definitely halt the execution scheduled for tonight.
