St. Joes Buys Cardinal's Mansion; PHL Hoax over Facebook Pic; DeGennaro Trial Delayed to Feb '13

St. Joseph University has purchased the Cardinal's mansion from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for $10 million. The residence has been the home for Philadelphia archbishops since it was purchased in the 1930's by Dennis Cardinal Dougherty for $115,000. The 13,000 sq-ft house has 16 rooms, a gardener's cottage, 6 car garage, and sits on 8.9 acres along City Ave. Archbishop Charles Chaput announced he'd sell the large house last January and will live in an apartment at St. Charles Seminary. He is also selling the retired priest's summer home in in Ventor with a current price tag of $6 million. Sale of these properties will help make up a $17.5 million operating deficit.

The 26-year-old Philadelphia man that called in a hoax to Philadelphia Airport authorities yesterday was angry over a photo that an airline passenger had posted on Facebook. The man, Kenneth W. Smith Jr., decided that an appropriate response to a 'compromising' picture of his girlfriend being put on the social network by her ex-boyfriend, passenger Christopher Shell, would be to call PHL and tell them that Shell intended to smuggle an explosive onto the airplane. The threat resulted in the US Airways flight being rerouted back to the airport, searched, and Shell detained. After everything was cleared, they realized it was a hoax. Smith will face federal charges that carry up to $250,000 in fines and 10 years in prison. Shell, however, was arrested when he landed in Dallas... on an outstanding marijuana possession.

The murder trial of Bucks county musician Danny DeGennaro has been pushed back from November 26th to next year on February 4th. The lawyers for the three men requested additional time to prepare their cases. Only 1 of the 5 defendants will be tried with the death penalty on the table. The others were found to be under 18 at the time of the crime. DeGennaro was killed by a shotgun blast at close range in his Levitown home during a botched robbery attempt. He has played with many artists including Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead and Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band. All five defendants are charged as adults with murder, robbery, burglary, conspiracy, and possession of a weapon, and are being held without bail.
