Philadelphia Firefighters Without Contract, PHL Air Hoax Victim Arrested, City Covers Walker Funeral

The labor dispute between Philadelphia and the firefighters' union is heading into its fourth year. For a second time, the city appealed an arbitration panel's decision this June, which ruled in favor of firefighters. They haven't had a contract since 2009. Mayor Nutter's Chief of Staff Everette Gillison says any claim that the city is disrespectful of the men and women in uniform is just plain false. The appeal is now in the hands of Common Pleas Court, although there's no word on its timeline.

The victim of a hoax that involved a Dallas-bound plane being recalled to Philadelphia International Airport Thursday morning was later arrested in Dallas on an outstanding warrant. Police say 29-year-old Christopher Shell was taken into custody for a second time on Thursday once he arrived in Dallas. Earlier on Thursday, Shell was taken into police custody after the US Airways plane he was on was forced to return to PHL following an anonymous phone call to airport police.

The Nutter Administration has decided to chip in after all for funeral costs for Police Officer Moses Walker, Jr., who was killed last month in a robbery attempt. Officer Walker was technically off his shift at the time of his death on August 18th, but spokesman Mark McDonald says a nearly-three week review of the circumstances led to the determination that Walker was nonetheless on duty, died in the line of duty, and is entitled to all honors and benefits. Those benefits include funeral costs and substantial state and federal benefits to his family.
