Philadelphia is planning to revamp 11 low performing schools in the school district. Next week, the district will begin a month of meetings with the community and school quality reviews to determine what to do with each school. The Philadelphia School District plans to revamp the schools by next fall, but does not plan on closing any of them. Police received a report Monday stating that a woman was kidnapped in the Juniata section of Philadelphia. A man reported to police saying that he saw a woman in hospital scrubs being hit over the head and dragged into a car on the 600 block of East Erie Avenue at around 9 pm on Sunday. After investigating into the report, and receiving no inquires of a missing person, Police determined the report was false and no kidnapping took place.

Turkey Hill Dairy, based in Lancaster County, is recalling packages of mislabeled ice cream. Some 48 oz containers of Dutch Chocolate Premium ice cream actually contain Rocky Road flavored ice cream. Rocky Road has almond and egg ingredients which could be a problem for those with food sensitivities and allergies. A 20-year-old man was shot and killed early Sunday morning in an apartment in Chester. The shooting happened on the 2100 block of 3rd Street. Police say several suspects came into the apartment where the victim was with his mother. One of the suspects opened fire on the victim, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother of the victim was not injured. The suspects fled after the shooting, and so far no arrests have been made. Police are still searching for the suspects motive.Read More |

Thousands gathered at Penn's Landing on Saturday morning to see the commissioning ceremony of the U.S. Navy's newest amphibious warship. The USS John P. Murtha is named after the late US Congressman from the 12th District of Pennsylvania. Murtha was the longest serving congressman in state history representing southwestern PA for 35 years. Ride sharing companies operating in Philadelphia gained a victory in court on Friday; a halt to the cease and desist order levied against them on Thursday. Commonwealth Court appeals Judge Robert Simpson halted the injuction put in place by Judge Linda Carpenter as part of a lawsuit filed by the Taxi Workers Alliance of Philadelphia. Two children were struck by a car in Northeast Philly Friday afternoon. The incident happened at around 4:30 at Large Street and Longshore Avenue. Police say the children that were hit were ages 2 and 7. Both of the children were taken to Aria Health Torresdale, and so far there is no word on their conditions. Police are still investigating the incident.

The New Jersey Senate and General Assembly have approved a package of bills that includes a 23 cent per gallon raise in the state's gas tax. The bill now goes to Governor Chris Christie. The tax increase will help replenish the Transportation Trust Fund. The package also reduces sales and estate taxes and offers tax credits to veterans and low-income residents.
