Broomall Bald Eagle set Free, Duck Boat Trial Halted, Turnpike Could Go 70mph

The young bald eagle discovered shot, hit by a car, and suffering lead poisoning in a Broomall parking lot three weeks ago is now free. Wildlife officials released it on Monday in Ridley Creek State Park. The eagle which spent it's days recovering at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, took off and flew strong on it's first flight. Only it knows where it'll go next.

The federal trial over the July 2010 fatal duck boat accident came to a halt today, as the judge in the non-jury trial urged the parties to try to reach a settlement. The trial was to decide the liability for the deaths of two Hungarian students aboard the tourist boat when it was hit by the tug pulled barge. The two boat operators claim it should be no more than $1.8 million according to 1851 maritime law, though the families won't settle for that amount. The trial will switch focus to other victims after this is settled.

A bill, approved by the House Transportation Committee, could allow the Turnpike Commission to raise the speed limit on some stretches of the Pennsylvania Turnpike to 70 miles per hour. The default speed would still be 55, but just like some areas now are 65 the Commission could raise it to 70. The bill doesn't say where, that would also be up to the Turnpike Commission. No timetable as to when or if it will go before the House for a vote.

Tonight, we'll have showers maybe a rumble of thunder and temperatures holding steady in the mid 60's for most of the evening in Philadelphia.
