WNBA Star Brittney Griner Sentenced to 9 yrs; US Declares Monkeypox Emergency; Kensington Baby Shot

U.S. women's basketball star Brittney Griner was convicted of smuggling drugs into Russia and was sentenced to 9 years in prison and fined $16,700. Griner was arrested on February 17 at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport when she arrived in the country. Officials found vape cartridges with 0.7 grams of cannabis oil in her luggage. Griner plays in the Russia basketball league during the WNBA offseason. The United States government has declared Griner as "wrongfully detained" and is negotiating for her release. Griner did plead guilty to the charges at the beginning of her trial, but has said that she did not intend to break any laws.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency on Thursday, 8/4, for the growing monkeypox outbreak. The declaration will direct more money and resources at the problem. There have been 6,600 cases of monkeypox across the country. Pennsylvania has had 173 cases, but New York has had 1,748. The disease is spread through close personal contact and causes a distinctive skin rash. There is a limited vaccine available to those who have had exposure and are at high risk, but the health emergency could help increase vaccine availability.

A man has been arrested in connection to the shooting of a 10-month-old baby girl on Sunday morning, 7/31. 45-year-old Santos Diaz was arrested on Thursday afternoon, 8/4. It happened around 10:40 a.m. outside a home on the 2000 block of East Ontario Street near Emerald Street in Kensington. There had been a wedding in the family the night before. An argument led to a physical confrontation before Diaz opened fire. The baby was struck in her left hand. She was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in stable condition. A 17-year-old boy was grazed in the leg, but did not need medical attention. Formal charges have not been announced.
