Arson Arrest in Deadly Fire/Collapse; Off Duty Officer Shoots Carjacker; Woman Hit by Police Vehicle

Officials in Philadelphia have ruled that the fire and building collapse that killed Philadelphia Fire Lt. Sean Williamson was an arson. Police have a suspect in custody. Al-Ashraf Khalil is the owner of the 3-story building. He is charged with maliciously damaging a building by means of fire, lying to federal agents concerning his whereabouts at the time of the fire, and aiding and abetting. Khalil was seen on surveillance footage going in and out of the building just as the fire started around 2 a.m.. He was initially questioned by authorities and said he was not in the area at the time. He then fled the country. He was arrested in Jordan and brought back to New York. The fire happened early Saturday morning, 6/18, on the 300 block of Indiana Avenue in the Fairhill neighborhood. The building collapsed after the fire was put out. Williamson was killed. He was laid to rest on Monday, 6/27. Four other firefighters and an inspector for L+I were injured. A second suspect is still being sought.

An off-duty corrections officer opened fire on a carjacker in Northeast Philadelphia on Monday night, 6/28. It happened around 11 p.m. on the 200 block of East Roosevelt Boulevard in Feltonville. The 59-year-old officer had just gotten into his white Toyota Avalon when he was pulled out of the car at gunpoint by a man wearing a mask and hoodie. The off-duty officer pulled his own gun and fired about 5 shots. The officer's car was found about a half mile away with bullet holes in it and blood on the driver's seat. A man with shots to his arms arrived at Temple University Hospital. Police are awaiting DNA results to match the suspect to the officer's car. The officer was not injured.

A woman was critically injured after she was hit by a police vehicle near South Street in Philadelphia on Tuesday morning, 6/28. It happened just after 9 a.m. near 9th and South Streets in the Bella Vista neighborhood. The 55-year-old woman was walking when she was struck by the vehicle. She was taken to Thomas Jefferson Hospital in critical condition. The Philadelphia Police Accident Investigation Division is investigating the crash.

The woman has died from her injuries.

Sports
Bryce Harper is expected to require surgery to repair his broken left thumb. The best case scenario would have him returning in 6 weeks. That means it is not a season ending injury.
