Filippino Lawyer Killed in Philly Shooting; Mullica River Fire Still Burning; 76yo Killed on Walk

A government lawyer from the Philippines was shot early Saturday morning, 6/19, while riding in an Uber with his mother on the way to Philadelphia International Airport to fly home. He died from his injuries on Sunday, 6/20. It happened around 4:10 a.m. at 38th and Spruce Street in Philadelphia's University City neighborhood. 35-year-old John Albert Laylo and his mother, Leah, were stopped at a red light. Someone in an unknown black vehicle, possible a Cadillac, came up from behind and fired several shots. The car then pulled along the driver side of the Uber and fired more shots. Laylo was struck in the head and taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he later died. His mother suffered cuts from shattered glass. Police are reviewing surveillance video from the area. They believe that this is a case of mistaken identity and the shooter meant to hit another target. The pair were in Philadelphia for a few days visiting family. Government officials from the Philippines met with Mayor Kenney today to encourage the investigation and to help in having Laylo's body sent back home.

The large wildfire in Wharton State Forest in Burlington County continues to burn on Tuesday, 6/21. The fire in the Pine Barrens is now called the Mullica River Fire. Officials said on Monday, 6/20, that the fire was not started by natural causes. They now believe it may have been caused by an illegal camp fire. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service says that they have made 'substantial progress' and the fire is now 85% contained. It started on Sunday morning and has now burned 13,500 acres. Officials believe it could reach 15,000 acres which would make it the largest fire in New Jersey in the past 15 years. It has spanned Washington, Shamong, Hammonton and Mullica townships. No injuries have been reported. Campers were evacuated and outdoor areas and activities have been closed. Authorities continue to investigate the illegal campfire. A 76-year-old man was shot and killed early Tuesday morning, 6/21, while he was out for his daily walk in Juniata. It happened around 5 a.m. on the 4200 block of Claridge Street near the intersection of East Hunting Park Avenue and L Street. The man was shot once to the head at close range. Police recovered a single shell casing. "This is a tragic homicide," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. "Why someone would shoot a 76-year-old male returning to his home after taking his morning walk - which family says he does on a regular basis - we don't have a motive right now. We don't know if robbery was a motive. We don't know if this individual was targeted for some reason." Police are looking at video from the area.
