| Coatesville Student Charged in School Stabbing; Absecon Police Shooting; DE Gov Vetoes Pot Bill |

A Chester County student is recovering after being stabbed multiple times throughout his body during a fight in a school bathroom. It happened on Tuesday morning, 5/24, at Coatesville Area High School in Caln Township. 16-year-old Odell Cannon allegedly stabbed 16-year-old Mickey Rayner Jr. in the neck, arm, side, and multiple times in the back after a fight broke out in the bathroom. Rayner Jr. was rushed to Paoli Hospital for surgery. He is expected to be ok. Police were initially searching for Cannon, but he turned himself in without incident. The Chester County District Attorney's Office announced on Wednesday, 5/25, that Cannon is being charged as adult with attempted murder of the first degree, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, possession of a weapon on school property, possessing instruments of crime, and related charges. He is being held at the Chester County Youth Center on $750,000 bail.
A police involved shooting occurred on Tuesday morning, 5/24, in Absecon, NJ. It happened outside a Dollar General Store on the 700 block of South New Road. Police were called to the location for the report of a man with a gun inside the store. A short time after police arrived, gunshots rang out. Nearby Holy Spirt High School was briefly placed on lockdown. No further information has been released other than no police officers were injured. The state attorney general's office has been notified and will be investigating.
On Tuesday, 5/24, Delaware Governor John Carney vetoed a bill that would have legalized possession of recreational marijuana up to one ounce. A bill to create a state-run marijuana industry with a 15% tax failed to pass the state House last week. It is not clear if the legislature would try to override Carney's veto. Carney said, "I recognize the positive effect marijuana can have for people with certain health conditions, and for that reason, I continue to support the medical marijuana industry in Delaware. I supported decriminalization of marijuana because I agree that individuals should not be imprisoned solely for the possession and private use of a small amount of marijuana - and today, thanks to Delaware’s decriminalization law, they are not. That said, I do not believe that promoting or expanding the use of recreational marijuana is in the best interests of the state of Delaware, especially our young people. Questions about the long-term health and economic impacts of recreational marijuana use, as well as serious law enforcement concerns, remain unresolved." |
