Brandon Bostian Not Guilty in Amtrak 188 Crash; Parkway Russian Flag Stolen; State Colleges Combine

A jury spent a little more than an hour in deliberations to return a not guilty verdict in the trial of the engineer at the helm of the deadly Amtrak 188 derailment in Philadelphia in May 2015. 38-year-old engineer Brandon Bostian was charged with 8 counts of involuntary manslaughter, 246 counts of reckless endangerment, and one count of risking a catastrophe. The train fell of the tracks on May 12, 2015, after it accelerated up to 106 mph as it entered the 50 mph limit curve at Frankford Junction. The NTSB found that Bostian was not under the influence or otherwise distracted, and simply lost situational awareness and sped up where he shouldn't have. This case has seen charges declined, dropped, and reinstated several times before being brought to trial. "There is no question that the excessive speed of the train that the defendant operated resulted in death and injury to his passengers. Our goal throughout this long legal process was to seek justice for each and every victim, and help bring victims' families and their loved ones closure. Ultimately, the jury did not find his actions to be criminal, and we respect the jury's verdict," a statement from the office Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro.

Flags for various nations around the world adorn lamp posts along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. On Friday morning, someone replaced the flag for Russia with a Ukrainian flag. The name plate for â€œRussiaâ€ is also missing. The flag for Russia's ally and accomplice in the war, Belarus, was also vandalized. These flags are high above the street and would require assistance to reach. The City of Philadelphia replaced the Russia flag and removed the damaged Belarus flag. They are looking for whomever is responsible.

The Pennsylvania State System Board of Governors voted on Wednesday, 3/2, to consolidate three state-owned universities. Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield universities will collectively be known as Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania. The individual schools will still use their names for logos and diplomas. They are working the the NCAA to allow each school to field their own sports teams. The change will create one administration. Students will be able to take classes at any of the schools. Last year, California, Clarion, and Edinboro universities merged into Pennsylvania Western University. Both combined entities are awaiting the Middle States Commission on Higher Education approval.
