Roger B. Segal ID'd as Wawa Stabbing Victim; 12yo Shot in Drive-by; Man Stabs Aunt, Shot by Police

The man who was found stabbed to death outside of a South Philadelphia Wawa store early Monday morning, 2/14, has been identified by police. 49-year-old Roger B. Segal was a bartender and accomplished musician (bassist) known throughout the local music scene and beyond. Family, friends, and colleagues remember Segal as being 'well-loved' by all. Segal worked as a bar tender at Woolly Mammoth bar on South Street. That is where he spent Super Bowl Sunday. On his way home he stopped at the Wawa on the 1600 block of Christopher Columbus Boulevard between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. He went inside, bought food, and brought it back to his car to eat. Several hours later, around 4 a.m., some customers walking by noticed that Segal looked under distress sitting in the driver's seat of his Kia. Fire Rescue smashed the rear window to gain access and pulled him from the vehicle. Segal was transported to Jefferson University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He had a stab wound to his abdomen.

Police are looking at surveillance video to determine what happened and when. They do not know if he was stabbed before or after he went into the store the first time or if he realized the extent of his injury. Philadelphia officials are expected to announce changes to the city's coronavirus COVID-19 health requirements on Wednesday, 2/16. The announcement will come during the weekly press conference with the city's health commissioner. "We'll be announcing some numbers, some data points tomorrow," Mayor Kenney said on Tuesday. "They'll be some adjustments tomorrow." Currently, masks are required at all indoor public spaces. Proof of vaccination is required at any place that serves food to eat on site (restaurants, bars, cafes, entertainment venues, sporting events). Philadelphia's Department of Public Health will how the meeting at 10 a.m.

Philadelphia Police shot and killed a man who stabbed his elderly aunt to death on Tuesday afternoon, 2/15, in South Philadelphia. It happened around 3:45 p.m. on the 2000 block of South Beechwood Street in the West Passayunk neighborhood. When police arrived, they found the 36-year-old suspect stabbing the 72-year-old woman. Two officers tased the man, but it had no effect. They they ordered the man to drop the knife multiple times, but he did not comply. The suspect then turned and lunged at police officers with the weapon. Officers opened fire and struck the man. He was taken to Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:10 p.m. His aunt had suffered multiple stab wounds. She was also taken to Presbyterian Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m. No officers were injured. The investigation continues.

A 12-year-old girl was shot and injured on Tuesday afternoon, 2/15, in Feltonville. It happened around 4 p.m. near D Street and Wyoming Street. The girl was outside a corner grocery store when a red car carrying three people pulled up. There were at least 10 other people standing near the corner. "The rear window goes down and they fired at least seven shots into a crowd of people were standing on the corner," said Captain John Walker with the Philadelphia Police Department. The girl was shot once in the stomach and was taken to Saint Christopher's Hospital in stable condition. Police are looking at surveillance from the area. No arrests have been made.
