Philadelphia 'Narcan Near Me' Tower Program; Ambler AutoBody Fire; Charges for Fairmount Suspect

The Philadelphia Health Department rolled out a new program aimed at fighting the opioid crisis on Thursday, 2/3. Health Commissioner Cheryl Bettigole announced the 'Narcan Near Me' program at Blackwell Library in West Philadelphia. Narcan is an opioid overdose reversal drug that comes in a nasal spray. It can be a lifesaving tool if administered quickly. This new program puts Narcan in easy-to-access vending towers. It is free and accessible 24/7. Each kit comes with two doses of the medicine, gloves, face shield, and instructions. The first tower will be located at this library. Another will be added at 60th and Market Streets in the future.

Firefighters from across Montgomery County were called to a three-alarm fire at an auto body shop in Ambler on Thursday morning, 2/3. It started just before 10:00 a.m. at Ebner's Auto Inc. on South Main Street near Butler Pike, and a second alarm was struck right away. A third alarm was struck at 10:30 a.m. It took four hours to bring under control. The shop owner and a mechanic were working on a car when the fire started. The owner was taken to the hospital. No word on his condition. SEPTA's Doylestown regional rail line was suspended for a few hours. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A man who pointed his weapon at police officers outside of bar in Fairmount earlier this week has now been charged. 38-year-old Ramon Antonio Miranda is charged with aggravated assault, possessing an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering another person, and other related crimes. It happened at 5 p.m. Monday, 1/31, on the 2700 block of Brown Street. Officers Robert Scarpello and Monnie Beard responded to the report of a person with a gun. The officers ordered Miranda several times to drop his weapon. The suspect turned and pointed his gun at the officers who then opened fire. Miranda was hit in the leg and taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital in stable condition. Per standard procedure, both officers have been placed on administrative duty while the incident is investigated. The two officers are both 14-year veterans from the 9th District.

The Jacksonville Jaguars has hired Doug Pederson as head coach. Pederson led the Philadelphia Eagles to victory in Super Bowl LII.

The NFL's Washington, DC team announced on Tuesday that it has changed its name to the "Washington Commanders." The franchise stopped using its longtime nickname "Redskins" in July 2020 following pressure from sponsors and the community due to its racial connotations. The team changed to the generic "Washington Football Team" for the '20 and '21 seasons as it decided on a permanent change. The franchise was founded in 1932 as the "Boston Braves." It was known as the "Redskins" since 1933. The team moved to Washington in 1937. "We are very excited about our final selection, which aligns with our values, carries forth our rich history, represents the region and, most importantly, is inspired and informed by you, our fans," team president Jason Wright said.
