Dr. Oz Running for Senate in PA; 14-year-old Boy Shot/Killed at Bus Stop; PA School Mask Mandate

Dr. Mehmet Oz annouced on Tuesday, 11/30, that he is running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania. He will be running in the primary as a Republican. The seat was left wide open after Senator Pat Toomey announced he would not be seeking another term in the 2022 elections. Numerous candidates have announced their own campaigns on both sides. Oz is best known for appearing on Oprah Winfrey and is own television show the Dr. Oz Show. He is also a practicing heart surgeon. The 61-year-old is a longtime New Jersey resident. He voted by mail in this year's election using the address of his wife's parents' Montgomery County residence in suburban Philadelphia.

A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed by two men while waiting for a bus after school on Monday in the city's Feltonville neighborhood. Samir Jefferson was waiting at the bus stop at Rising Sun and Wyoming Avenues. The two gunmen approached Jefferson and opened fire. They chased after the teen and shot him 18 times. Police recovered at least 35 spent shell casings from the street. Samir was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 4 p.m. The two men fled in a vehicle. Police took two persons-of-interest into custody after stopping a car matching the description. Police believe this was a targeted attack. The motive is under investigation. Jefferson was in the 9th grade at Thomas Edison High School.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court overruled a lower court's ruling that would have lifted the mask mandate for K-12 schools and child care facilities this weekend. Last month, Commonwealth Court ruled that acting Health Secretary Alison Beam did not have the authority under state law to enact the mandate. The Wolf administration appealed that decision which automatically triggered a stay on the court's order. The stay was then lifted by the same court. The PA Supreme Court reversed that decision and the mandate will stay in place while the appeal is litigated. Governor Wolf has already announced that he plans to get rid of the mandate and return control to local school districts on January 17.
