Temple Student Shot/Killed in Robbery; Teen Boy Shot/Killed; Homeowner Shoots Intruder Self-Defense

A Temple University student was shot and killed on Sunday afternoon, 11/28, near his off-campus residence just after returning home from the Thanksgiving break. 21-year-old Samuel Sean Collington of Prospect Park, Delaware County, was shot twice in the chest. He was taken to Temple University Hospital when he was prounced dead. It happened around 1:30 p.m. on the 2200 block of N. Park Avenue. Collington had just parked and was unloading things when he was approached by a robber and shot. No arrests have been made, but officials are reviewing surveillance video from the area. Collington was a senior political science major and was expected to graduate from the College of Liberal Arts in the spring.

A teenage boy was shot and killed in North Philadelphia on Sunday night, 11/28. It happened around 8 p.m. on the 400 block of West Diamond Street. 16-year-old Kanye Davis was shot 8 times throughout his body and was found inside a Nissan. Police rushed him to Temple University Hospital. He was pronounced dead around 8:30 p.m. No arrests have been made.

A female homeowner shot an intruder Sunday night, 11/28, as he attempted to break in to her house in Holmesburg neighborhood home. It happened around 11 p.m. on the 4700 block of Ashville Street. Police arrived and found the 31-year-old suspect shot in the basement. He is an ex-boyfriend of the woman. He was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition. No further details have been released.

Sports
Temple University has fired head football coach Rod Carey. Carey was 12-20 in his three seasons for the Owls, but only 4-15 in the last two. He finished the 2021 season with 7 straight losses. Carey was hired in January 2019 from Northern Illinois. He was brought in after Manny Diaz took the Temple job but then quickly left when the job at Miami became available. Assistant coach Thad Ward will act as interim coach for the Owls.

"It's never an easy decision to replace a head coach," Temple athletic director Arthur Johnson said. "The past two seasons have not been easy with the challenges of the pandemic. I want to thank Rod for staying committed to our student-athletes and wish him and his family well in their next chapter."

"I'm thankful to Temple University and the Temple community for my time here," Carey said. "I wish all the student-athletes nothing but success in their lives moving forward. There is a great nucleus of young players here and I'm anxious to watch them play. I will certainly be an Owls fan going forward."
