Thanksgiving Turkey Tradition at Cacia's; No More Free Street Parking; Philly Record 500 Homicides

Cacia's Bakery in South Philadelphia continued its Thanksgiving tradition this morning. The bakery opens its oven, usually used for breads and pastries, to the community each year to bake their Thanksgiving turkeys. People start lining up before dawn on West Ritner Street with their birds all prepared and wrapped in roasting pans. Sam Cacia, 4th-generation owner of Cacia's Bakery, numbers the turkeys before putting them in the oven for a long, slow cook. Customers come back about 6 hours later for their perfectly cooked turkey. This year they fit 92 birds, but have had as many as 140 in previous years.

The City of Philadelphia has decided to discontinue the annual practice of free metered street parking on Saturdays during the holidays. The free parking has been offered to encourage shopping during the holidays for the past 20 years. The City says that it was counterproductive. The city's research showed that individuals would park all-day for free. This would discourage the parking spot turnover needed to allow for shoppers to find a spot. On-street parking in Center City is also hampered by the numerous outdoor streeteries that restaurants have constructed on the street due to the pandemic.

The Office of Transportation, Infrastructure and Sustainability says:
"The best practice for on-street parking management says that there should be one or two open spots on every block. This allows residents to find a spot and patronize businesses without excessive circling the block.

Similar programs, such as free parking on Wednesdays or First-Fridays were discontinued in the past without negative impacts.

Free parking on Saturdays in December encouraged all-day on-street parking while discouraging the turnover that is needed for customers to find a spot and start shopping.

The City will continue to work with the PPA and our businesses to ensure the best accessibility to our incredible shopping districts."

Philadelphia has reached 500 homicides for 2021, tying the record for one year set in 1990. Last year's total was 499. The latest shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, 11/24, near 7th and Jackson streets in South Philadelphia. A 55-year-old woman was shot in the chest. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. There are still 5 weeks left in 2021.
