SEPTA police say the attack on four Asian students by four female Black students on a Broad Street Line train was racially motivated. The suspects, who are all under 17, are charged with aggravated assault, ethnic intimidation, criminal conspiracy, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct charges. One is additionally charged with robbery for stealing a victim's Airpods. It happened around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, 10/17, near the Erie Station. "This was an attack based on ethnicity, and ethnic slurs were used by the attackers," SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel said. "This matter will proceed in the juvenile justice system; as such, we will not be releasing the names of the defendants. We are grateful to our partners in law enforcement, particularly SEPTA Police, for their swift investigation of this incident," said the district attorney's office in a statement.
WARNING Graphic/Violent:
Philadelphia City Councilmember Bobby Henon stepped down from his leadership positions on four council committees on Wednesday, 11/17. Henon was convicted on multiple conspiracy and fraud charges on Monday, 11/15, alongside labor leader John 'Johnny Doc' Dougherty. Henon sent a letter to City Council President Darrell Clarke resigning as Chair of the Committee on Public Property and Public Works, the Chair of the Committee on Licenses and Inspections, the Vice Chair of the Finance Committee and the Vice Chair of the Committee on Public Health and Human Services. He has not resigned from City Council. Henon would be required to relinquish his seat when he is sentenced. That is scheduled for the end of February.
Philadelphia Police made an arrest in the deadly armed robbery of a North Philadelphia check cashing business earlier this week. 64-year-old Robert Jiles was arrested on Thursday, 11/18, and is charged with criminal homicide, robbery, and other offenses. It happened around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, 11/16, at the All Checks Cashed store on the 5800 block of Old York Road in Ogontz. The store owner, 67-year-old Aruna Mittal, stepped out of the store around 12:30 p.m. When she returned around 1 p.m. she was followed inside by Jiles. He was armed with a gun. He pushed his way past the security glass. There was a struggle for the weapon. Jiles then shot Mittal once in the chest. She was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital. Jiles made off with some cash. The store was equipped with surveillance video. Mittal ran the business with her husband. |
