Longtime New Jersey state Senate president Democrat Steve Sweeney was defeated by political newcomer Republican Edward Durr. Sweeney has represented New Jersey's 3rd Legislative District in the Senate since 2002 and has led the chamber as President since 2010. Durr is a furniture company truck driver who spent $153 on his campaign.

Dr. Cheryl Bettigole has been named Philadelphia's Health Commissioner. She had been Acting Health Commissioner since May 2021 after Dr. Thomas Farley resigned the position. Mayor Kenney announced the change on Thursday, 10/4. "Throughout her entire career, Dr. Bettigole has demonstrated a deep commitment to prioritizing equity, access, and prevention in public health," Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement. "I'm confident that with her experience, vision, and steadfast leadership, we've found the best person to lead the Health Department as we work urgently on multiple fronts to ensure the health and wellbeing of all residents."

"I am honored by this opportunity to serve our city and to further our goal of promoting and protecting the health of all Philadelphians," Dr. Bettigole said in a statement Thursday. "I look forward to continuing this work with my colleagues and our many valued partners throughout the city. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of equity, access, and the use of a data-informed approach in every aspect of public health, and I am committed to championing those priorities in the work ahead."

Authorities have identified the shooter who killed a mother and her adult son who were found in their Chester County home early Wednesday morning, 11/3. 40-year-old Timothy Harris is believed to be responsible for the deaths of 53-year-old Kimberly Harris and her 22-year-old son, Jordan Foster. They had been a couple for 15 years. It started before 9:45 p.m. that night on the 300 block of Ashmun Avenue in Lower Oxford Township. The couple had gotten into an argument. Timothy shot and killed the two. He fled the house and got into a hit-and-run accident in East Marlborough Township. At 9:53 p.m., he was involved in another accident in Kennett Township. This time Harris got out of the vehicle and shot himself. Investigators were later able to connect these incidents to the murders.
