A looming strike has been averted as SEPTA and their largest union have reached a tentative agreement for a new 2-year-deal ahead of the October 31 deadline. Transit Union Workers Local 234 represents around 5,000 city transit workers that operate buses, trains, and trolleys in Philadelphia. A strike would have had many consequences for citizens who use the system to get to work, school, appointments, and more. "I am very pleased that we were able to come to terms without a strike," TWU Local 234 President Willie Brown said in the release. "Our members are essential workers who move Philadelphia and who have risked their lives putting their own families at risk during this pandemic." They were able to reach a deal that includes pay raises, pandemic hazard pay, and parental leave. There will be a 3% raise each year of the deal. Workers will receive pandemic hazard pay of $1 per hour worked between March 15, 2020 and March 15, 2021 of up to $2,200 per worker. The agreement also includes two weeks of paid parental leave. That includes both women and men and applies to birth or adoption. A union ratification vote will take place next Friday, 11/5.
Philadelphia has settled a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Walter Wallace Jr. Wallace was shot and killed by police officers in West Philadelphia in October 2020. He was having a mental health crisis as was armed with a knife. Officers ordered him several times to drop the weapon, but he did not comply. Those officers were not equipped with Tasers. The settlement with the family was not disclosed, but is reportedly $2.5 million. "Those terms were never their primary objective in their calls for justice after Walter's death. Rather they have been focused on establishing the lasting change to the city that they are confident will save lives through the agreement and injunctive relief," Shaka Johnson, Wallace’s family attorney, said. As part of the agreement, Philadelphia will equip all police officers with Tasers.
A New Jersey man was followed all the way home from Parx Casino in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and shot dead inside his house in an apparent robbery early Tuesday morning, 10/26. 54-year old Sree Aravapalli of Plainsboro, NJ, left the Bensalem casino and was followed 50 miles to Briardale Court in Plainsboro, Middlesex County. 27-year-old Jekai Reid-John of Norristown did not known Aravapalli, but believed he cashed out a significant amount of winnings. They arrived at the home around 3:30 a.m. Reid-John broke in through a rear sliding door and shot Aravapalli multiple times. His wife and children were upstairs sleeping at the time. Reid-John was arrested in Montgomery County on Thursday, 10/28. He is charged with first-degree murder and will be extradited to New Jersey.
