SEPTA Strike or Not, Philly Schools Open; Mother + Baby Shot; Man Stabbed in Wells Fargo Center Lot

The School District of Philadelphia announced on Thursday, 10/28, that schools will remain open on a normal schedule regardless of any possible SEPTA strike on Monday, November 1. If a strike does happen, any student who cannot make it to school because of transportation issues will be expected to login to Google Classroom for assignments and engage in asynchronous learning daily. There will be 12 grab and go meal sites for students who cannot get to school.

"While SEPTA is optimistic that negotiations will continue and an agreement will be reached, we want to share our plans in case there is a service interruption," said Superintendent William R. Hite. "Attending school in-person provides our young people with the familiar routines, sense of community and support services that they need for their social, emotional and academic well-being. Now more than ever, our schools are safe havens for thousands of students who are experiencing the very real impacts of increasing gun violence and other traumas impacting our communities."

A 33-year-old mother and 1-year-old baby were shot while inside their Southwest Philadelphia home early Thursday morning, 10/28. It happened just before 2 a.m. on the 1100 block of S. 56th Street in the Kingsessing neighborhood. "We know that this 33-year-old female lives at this location with her four children between the ages of 1 and 11. All her children were home at the time," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. The woman's live-in boyfriend says he discovered her in an upstairs bedroom. She had two gunshot wounds to the back. She was taken to Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. The baby suffered a graze wound to the stomach and was treated on location. The boyfriend is cooperating with police. So far there is no shooter or motive in the case.

A man was found stabbed multiple times in a parking lot at the Wells Fargo Center after a J. Cole concert on Wednesday night, 10/27. The 40-year-old man was discovered in H Lot around midnight. Philadelphia police say he had stab wounds to the back, left arm and had a laceration to the head. They are non life-threatening injuries. Wells Fargo Center says the man was an independent vendor operating illegally on the property. He was not a guest or anyway associated with the venue. No arrests have been made.
