The Bellwether District Planned for Refinery Site; Police Shot, Suspect Dead; Teen Killed in Ambush

Hilco Redevelopment Partners, which owns the the former site of Philadelphia Energy Solutions, has announced plans for the old South Philadelphia refinery. The Bellwether District will be a major economic hub. "Our plan is to transform the site into a commercial hub to be shared by dozens of world-class companies that will benefit from Philadelphia's diverse workforce and strategic location with an environmentally responsible infrastructure that will be great for all Philadelphians," HRP CEO Roberto Perez says. Hilco bought the site after it was destroyed by a massive explosion and fire that destroyed the refinery in 2019 and forced PES into bankruptcy. They will first be leading the remediation of the 150-year-old, 1,300-acre industrial site.

A Philadelphia police officer was injured and a suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Overbrook on Tuesday afternoon, 10/26. It happened around 3 p.m. on 5700 block of Overbrook Avenue near the campus of Saint Joseph's University. A 35-year-old officer and a 43-year-old officer responded to a report of a man with a weapon and possible mental issues. They were confronted by a 31-year-old man armed with a hammer and a pickaxe when they entered the house. Officers ordered the man to drop the weapons, but he did not comply. The man began to walk towards the officers. The 35yo officer shot the suspect with a Taser. The man fell to the ground, but got right back up and rushed the officers. He hit one officer in the head and knocked him to the ground. "While the officer was on the ground, the offender then mounted the officer, sitting on top of him and struck him repeatedly with one or both of the weapons," said Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw. Both officers then opened fire on the suspect. The officer on the ground was also struck in the leg by gunfire. The suspect died at the hospital and the officer is in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed in an ambush after arriving home from working an evening shift at McDonald's with his twin sister on Tuesday night, 10/26. Ahjaon Jackson and his sister both worked a 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. shift. They took a short Lyft ride to their home on the 200 block of East Fariston Drive in East Oak Lane. At least a dozen shots rang out as soon as they exited the vehicle. "Due to the fact that this 16-year-old was hit multiple times, over 10 times, in his head, chest, and his back, it appears he was clearly the intended target due to the fact that he was struck so many times by gunfire," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. The sister was able to run into the house and was not injured. A gun was found, but it is unclear who it belongs to. Police visited the McDonad's where they work. "We were told by other employees there including the manager that there were no problems, no disturbances, no altercations, and especially no problems involving this 16-year-old," Small said. Police are looking for three gunman.
