Delaware Student Charged in Off-Campus Attack, Students Protest; Video of Rittenhouse BASE Jumpers

A University of Delaware student has been arrested after he allegedly kidnapped and attacked a female student in his off-campus apartment on Friday, 10/8. 20-year-old Brandon Freyre of Maryland is charged with kidnapping second degree, assault second degree, strangulation, terroristic threatening, assault third degree, and criminal mischief. It happened around 4 a.m. Friday, 10/8, in Freyre's apartment on the 100 block of East Main Street in Newark.

Freyre and the victim, who had recently broken up with each other, got into a verbal argument. Apparently, Freyre was jealous that the victim had attended a party the night before at a fraternity that was not his own. The altercation escalated and he is accused of damaging her property, hitting her with blunt objects, spray painting her in the eyes with orange paint, threatening to kill her, and choking her unconscious. He then blocked her from leaving the apartment and held her inside for several hours. After 4-5 hours, he threw her down a flight of stairs and she managed to escape and call police. He was being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington in lieu of $38,100 bail, but has since made bond. Freyre's roommates were home at the time and did nothing to stop the attack.

Freyre has been suspended by the University of Delaware and has had his membership in the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity permanently revoked. Students have been protesting the university's response to the incident saying the school should have addressed it more quickly. "Even though it was off campus it did occur between two University of Delaware students. And just, in general, promoting a more positive culture and safer culture on campus is really important," said sophomore and organizer Kiera Spann.

A trio of BASE jumpers were caught on video leaping from a condo building under construction in Rittenhouse Square on Monday, 10/11. Candace Skinner posted the video to Instagram. The three jumped from The Laurel at 1911 Walnut St., which is a 48-story building. They landed via parachute on the roof of a separate building. Skinner happened to be on her roof deck at the right moment to capture the daredevils on camera. BASE jumping (Building, Antenna, Span, and Earth) is obviously dangerous and illegal without a permit in most places. The Laurel is being developed by New York-based Southern Land Company.

"It appears multiple individuals BASE jumped from The Laurel, trespassing onto private property and putting their safety and the safety of others at risk. This is incredibly troublesome. We absolutely do not condone this type of behavior. As such, we have filed a police report. Safety and security are top priorities for us, and we will take appropriate steps to increase security at The Laurel in an effort to prevent this from happening again," said Southern Land Company in a statement.
