A Philadelphia judge has ordered the City of Philadelphia to remove the plywood box surrounding the statue of Christopher Columbus in Marconi Plaza on South Broad Street. Judge Paula Patrick of the Court of Common Pleas signed the order on Friday, 10/8, granting the appeal brought by the Friends of Marconi Plaza. The statue was boxed up by the city in June 2020 after it became a focal point of some of the unrest in the city. Part of Friday's order also allows the appellants to construct a clear structure to protect the statue (see order below). The city plans to appeal this decision. "We cannot, and have no intention to, remove the box at this time," said Acting Communications Director Kevin Lessard. "We continue to believe it is in the best interest and public safety of all Philadelphians that the statue remains secured in its box."

This weekend is the Italian American Parade (formally the Columbus Day Parade). It starts at noon near Broad and Washington and heads south to Marconi Plaza for a festival.

A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed before school on Friday, 10/8, in North Philadelphia. It happened around 9 a.m. on the 3100 block of Judson Street in Strawberry Mansion. The boy was sitting in a PT Crusier with other people when the vehicle was fired upon. The victim's school, E.W. Rhodes Middle School at 29th and Clearfield, was placed under lockdown. No arrests have been made.

A mathematics teacher at a private school in Chestnut Hill was arrested after the FBI discovered multiple images of child pornography in his possession on Thursday, 10/7. 41-year-old Andrew Wolf of Roxborough is facing multiple counts of possessing and distributing child pornography. The FBI received a tip that he had uploaded the offending material to his Dropbox account. He is also accused of trying to pay minors to send him sexually explicit videos through social media. Wolf taught at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. He is currently on administrative leave.

Springside Chestnut Hill Academy said: "We are all unsettled and upset by this news and acted immediately to inform our community of the situation as well as put Mr. Wolf on administrative leave. We do not anticipate his return. We are working closely with the FBI on their investigation, which was prompted by activity that occurred outside of SCH, over the summer and while Mr. Wolf was on parental leave. Springside Chestnut Hil Academy has absolutely no tolerance for such activity and is unyielding in its commitment to the safety of our students."
