Daughter Arrested in Surf City Double Murder; Charges Against PA Pipelines; I76 Crash Murder Charge

A Chester County woman has been arrested and charged with the murder of her father and his girlfriend in his Long Beach Island shore home. 55-year-old Sherry Hefferman of Landenberg, PA, is charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon in the deaths of her father 87-year-old John Enders of Surf City and 75-year-old Francoise Pitoy of Manchester. Hefferman was taken into custody by Pennsylvania State Police at her home on Monday, 10/4. Surf City police discovered the two deceased on Sunday afternoon, 10/3, after performing a welfare check. They were found in Enders' bayfront home on North 7th Street. Officials say they each suffered multiple stab wounds. An autopsy performed on Elders on Monday, 10/4, found cause of death to be multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma. Manner of death was ruled homicide. An autopsy of Pitoy was to be performed on Tuesday.

In May, Enders had moved the ownership of the home from a trust to his name. The 6 bedroom/4 bathroom home on Barnegat Bay is listed for sale at $1.999 million. Real estate listings indicate that it is under contract and a sale is pending. Prosecutors have not revealed a suspected motive in the killings.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced criminal charges on Tuesday, 10/5, against the developer of gas pipelines in the state. The news conference was held at Marsh Creek State Park in Downingtown which was the site of an August 2020 gas spill from the Sunoco Pipeline LP. Energy Transfer, Sunoco's parent company, faces 48 criminal counts. They are accused of releasing industrial waste at 22 sites in 11 counties. Shapiro says the charges are for "illegal behavior that related to the construction of the Mariner East 2 pipeline that polluted our lakes, our rivers and our water wells and put Pennsylvaniaâ€™s safety at risk." The Mariner East 2 pipeline transports propane, ethane and butane from the enormous Marcellus Shale and Utica Shale gas fields in Western Pennsylvania to refineries and export terminals in Marcus Hook, PA. "There is a duty to protect our air and water, and when companies harm these vital resources through negligence - it is a crime," AG Shapiro said. "By charging them, we can both seek to hold them criminally accountable and send a clear message to others about how seriously we take protecting the environment and public health."

The Montgomery County District Attorney's office has announced new charges against the woman who struck and killed a first responder at the scene of an existing crash on the Schuylkill Expressway in July. 63-year-old Jacqueline Walker of Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, is charged with third-degree murder, homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and other related offenses. It happened around 3:23 a.m. on July 24 in the westbound lanes of I-76 near Waverly Road. Fire crews from Belmont Hills Fire Company and Gladwyne Fire Company had responded to a two-vehicle crash on the highway blocking the right lane and shoulder. Their emergency lights were flashing and cones were setup to direct traffic to the left lane. As they were on scene, Jacquelyn Walker of Pemberton, New Jersey, drove up the right shoulder at high speed and struck three firefighters, a state trooper, and one of the original crash vehicles. Lower Merion Firefighter 49-year-old Thomas Royds was taken to Paoli Hospital where he died from his injuries. The other three were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center with serious injuries.

Initially, authorities thought she may have been driving under the influence but that was not the case. It was determined that three of her four brakes did not work and she drove the car anyway. "While the defendant was taken into custody at the scene of the crash, that was just the beginning of the investigation," District Attorney Kevin Steele said. "Our extensive investigation found that Walker operated her vehicle despite knowing that her brakes were not in functioning order, operating her vehicle in such an extreme reckless manner that she plowed through an active, well-marked emergency response area, severely injuring three first responders and killing another first responder, leading us to add the third-degree murder charge."
