Dr. William Hite Announces Last Year; 'Near Certainty' Cops Shot Fanta Bility; Gilbert Newton Trial

Philadelphia School District Superintendent Dr. William Hite unexpectedly announced that he will not seek a contract renewal at the end of his current term. He said in a video message on Monday night, 9/27, that he will be stepping down after the 2021-2022 school year. He term ends in August 2022. "After much reflection, I've decided not to renew my contract when it expires in August 2022," Dr. Hite said. Hite started in Philadelphia in June 2012. He was previously the superintendent of Prince George County Public School District in Maryland. The Board of Education plans to announce a transition and search process.

Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer announced on Monday, 9/27, that initial ballistics analysis has concluded with "near certainty" that police officers' gunfire killed a young girl and injured others outside a high school football game last month. The full forensic report is still pending. It happened on August 27 outside Academy Park High School stadium in Sharon Hill. Spectators were leaving the stadium following the game. At that time an argument led to a shooting about a block from the stadium. At the same time, a car pulled in front of the stadium. "We have concluded that the gunfire, combined with the movement of the vehicle, precipitated responsive gunfire from the Sharon Hill police officers," Stollsteimer said in a statement. Investigators believe that officers hit 4 of the 5 gunshot victims including 8-year-old Fanta Bility who was killed. Those officers have been placed on administrative duties. "Sharon Hill Borough has engaged Kelley B. Hodge of Fox, Rothschild LLP to conduct an administrative review of the Sharon Hill Police Department policies and procedures related to police use of deadly force," Stollsteimer wrote. A grand jury will investigate possible criminal charges.

The trial of a Philadelphia teenager who is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death at an Abington train station is underway. 19-year-old Gilbert Newton III is charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, and possessing an instrument of crime in the death of 18-year-old Morgan McCaffery of Abington Township. It happened on July 27, 2020 at the Meadowbrook Train Station on Valley Road in Abington. The pair had recently broken off a yearlong relationship and had agreed to meet at the station to talk. McCaffery was stabbed more than 30 times and was found next to her running car. Police found Newton later that morning at his home still wearing bloody clothes. His lawyer doesn't deny that Newton killed McCaffery, but says that he should be charged with the lesser count of manslaughter and not first-degree murder. Prosecutors have shown evidence that he premeditated the killing, including numerous texts saying he wanted to stab her.
