Teacher's Aide Out On Bail Kills Self; Supreme Court Blocks Eviction Ban; Rhys Hoskins Out

A teacher's aide in Bucks County accused of sexually assaulting a teenage student last month, shot and killed herself last weekend. 38-year-old Jennilynne M. Derolf was charged with felony counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor, aggravated indecent assault, and institutional sexual assault and misdemeanor counts of indecent assault and corruption of minors. Derolf worked as an aide at the Valley Day School in Falls Township where the 14-year-old boy was a student. She was arrested on July 15, and the boy's family approached law enforcement. The boy told police that the two communicated via a cell phone app and had sexual intercourse three times in her vehicle at different locations. Derolf's original bail was 10% of $900,000. It was reduced to 10% of $100,000 which she posted on July 23. On August 22, Derolf contacted the victim and arranged to meet him again. The boy's family informed police. Officers went to the area of Bristol Pike and Wheatsheaf Lane at 4:15 p.m. When they arrived at the location, Derolf shot and killed herself with a gun. The victim was not injured.

The U.S. Supreme Court is blocking the Biden administration from continuing to enforce a temporary ban on evictions due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. The court said that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lacked the authority under federal law to extend the moratorium as it did on August 3. The CDC would need explicit congressional authorization. The decision was 6-3 with the three liberal judges dissenting. According to Census Bureau data, there are roughly 3.5 million people facing eviction in the next two months.

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Rhys Hoskins will miss the remainder of the season to undergo surgery to repair an abdominal tear. Hoskins was first placed on the 10-day IL on Thursday, 8/26, for an ongoing groin strain before they made the decision to shut him down and get the surgery done now. "It's frustrating. It's upsetting," he said. "You want to be out there with your team, especially at this time of year. There's been a lot of effort by a lot of people the last couple of weeks to make sure that was an option and I'm very appreciative of that. It just didn't go as planned. It stinks. It really stinks. But at least by getting the surgery now, I will have a full off-season to prepare (for 2022)."

Pitcher Zach Eflin was activated after missing more than five weeks with right patella tendinitis. He was supposed to start on Thursday, 8/26, but was scratched right before the game because he experienced discomfort in his right knee while warming up. Matt Moore started in his place. Phillies lost to the Diamondbacks 8-7.
