Cape May Lifeguard Critical After Rowing Accident; 3 Arrested for AK-47 Shots; Pilot Dies in Crash

A 16-year-old first year Cape May lifeguard remains in the hospital after being critically injured on Thursday, 8/19. Norman V. Inferrera was out on regular patrol, rowing in a lifeguard boat on Thursday, 8/19. The surf had been rough and he was out in the boat to keep swimmers close to shore. The boat was broadsided by a wave and capsized. The teen hit his head and was knocked unconscious. Fellow lifeguards were able to pull him from the water and begin CPR on the beach. He was taken to Cape Regional Medical Center in Middle Township and later flown to Cooper University Medical Center in Camden where he remains in critical condition.

UPDATE: Inferrera died from his injuries on Friday night, 8/20. He is from Phoenixville, PA.

Three people have been arrested after a man shot an AK-47 in the air near Temple University's campus early Friday morning, 8/20. It happened just after 3 a.m. at Broad and Norris Streets. Surveillance footage shows a man leaning out of the rear driver's side window of a minivan with the rifle pointed in the air. Temple Police heard the shots and tracked down the suspects. 30-year-old Gregory Sizer, 31-year-old Akeem Robinson, and 30-year-old Jeanette Perez are facing weapons charges. The person holding the weapon on video was not identified. Students have been returning to campus all this week to begin the fall semester.

A pilot preparing for an upcoming air show in the Poconos died following a crash shortly after takeoff on Friday afternoon, 8/20. It happened around 12:35 p.m. at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. 50-year-old Andy Travnicek of Hampton, New Hampshire, was the only person aboard the T-6 Texan WWII-era plane when it went down. Travnicek was a member of the GEICO Skytypers team that was going to perform at the Great Pocono Raceway Airshow on Saturday, 8/21. He was a commercial airline pilot and U.S. Air Force veteran. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
