Philadelphia Folk Festival Announces Aug 21-22nd Digital Lineup Including Performers Who Made the BIG FLIP from the In-Person Martin Stage:

(AUG 13, 2021 - PHILADELPHIA) The Philadelphia Folksong Society is thrilled to share the full lineup for the Digital Philadelphia Folk Festival, presented online, this Aug 21-22nd. As the virus has returned in the form of a highly infectious variant, PFF had to flip the in-person festival, literally overnight, to a fully online format in order to keep festival goers safe. Digital tickets are on sale now at folkfest.org.
This has left the organization little time to flip the performers from the in-person stage to an online platform, but the PFF team is dedicated and are delighted to share the confirmed performers for this year's event. We would also like to thank the performers and their teams for working with us to make the jump. Performers who were able to transition to our online platform are Bettye LaVette, Livingston Taylor, Dustbowl Revival, Raye Zaragoza, Susan Werner, John Flynn, Heather Maloney, and Matt Nakoa!
New to the lineup are folk legend Peggy Seeger, Dar Williams, Jonathan Byrd & the Pickup Cowboys, Sarah King, Gathering Time, Dave Ernst, local artists from the Philadelphia Music Co-Op (PMC), Canis Major Music artists, plus ALL of the the amazing performers being presented by our international partners: Showcase Scotland Expo, Arts & Culture Wales, the International Indigenous Music Summit, the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance, and the Canadian Folk Music Awards.
Postcards from Scotland program will feature: Blue Rose Code, Eabhal, Gnoss, Iona Fyfe, Elephant Sessions, Ryan Young, Skerryvore, The Jellyman's Daughter, The Outside Track, Niteworks, Fara and Zoë Bestel.
Giiwewizh (to carry home), a special International Indigenous Music Summit project that will feature 16 Indigenous artists from across Canada in 16 short musical documentaries, produced by Jennifer Podemski and directed by Sarain Fox. Featuring Aysanabee, Beatrice Deer, Blue Moon Marquee, Classic Roots, GR Gritt, Hasaatuk, Jay Gilday, Julian Taylor, Kanen, Logan Staats, Mamarudegyal, Morgan Toney, Nimkii, The North Sound, Shawnee, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, and a special full set from International Indigenous Music Summitt co-founder and Philly Folk favorite Amanda Rheaume.
Storytelling is an important part of Indigenous cultures around the world. Narrative sovereignty is at the heart of the Giiwewizh project. Indigenous people continue to advocate for the reclamation of their cultures, voices, and narratives. Giiwewizh celebrates artistic excellence in the Indigenous music community, the invaluable contributions to the mainstream music scene, and the resilience of Indigenous voices.
PMC (Philadelphia Music Co-op) is the Philadelphia Folksong Society's artist development program, working with 100 local acts that highlight the very best in Philadelphia folk music that demand and deserve their place on the world's stage. Joining the Festival this year digitally, flipping from the in person event include Rachel Andie & the V Element, John Byrne Band, Kuf Knotz & Christine Elise, Driftwood Soldier, Stella Ruze, Laura Lizcano, The Hoppin' Boxcars, AC Sapphire, and Valentina Sounds. In addition, we are thrilled to announce the addition of April Mae & the June Bugs, Avi Wisnia, GF Patrick, Jackson Pines, The Honey Badgers, and Mara Levine.
NERFA Presents Young Folk will have its sixth straight showcase at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, highlighting two phenomenal young musicians from the northeast region, Philadelphia's own Vassal and Brantford, Ontario's Benjamin Dakota Rogers.
Digital Tickets are available NOW, via our website, and allow access to all stages, on demand access to watch and rewatch the festival from Aug 23 until August 31st along with the PFF archives throughout the month of August.
About the BIG FLIP to ONLINE:
The Philadelphia Folksong Society announced the cancellation of the IN-PERSON portion of the 59 1/2 Pocket-Sized Philadelphia Folk Festival and are now presenting the Festival entirely online this Aug 21-22nd. PFS is going forward with the Online portion of the event to present extraordinary artists, both local and international, bringing them to you through our own online digital festival experience, developed by Moxie Event Productions. We encourage everyone to purchase a digital ticket to the event, via our website, folkfest.org.
Thank you to all who have already purchased tickets to PFF 59 1/2 and to the volunteers, we are grateful for your continued support! Digital ticket holders have already been enjoying access to the full digital festival experience since August 1st. Ticket holders to the in-person event will be receiving emailed instructions about their tickets, access to the digital festival, and refunds.
Since March 2020, the Philadelphia Folksong Society has followed the science, consulting with local and national infectious disease experts to ensure the safety of our folk community in pursuit of their mission to preserve the past, promote the present, and secure the future of folk music and related forms of expression. With health guidelines changing daily and the rise in COVID infections to their highest in months, coupled with the fact that PFF is a family event and that children are not able to be vaccinated, we have made the decision to cancel the in-person portion of the Festival.
"The team at the Philadelphia Folksong Society is the best there is and has proven consistently able to produce a robust and entertaining online event," said Rob Bralow, President of the Board for the Philadelphia Folksong Society. "As a lifelong fest-goer, I know I share in the disappointment of many that we will not be together this year, but after reviewing the data and the science available, we believe this to be the best decision for the safety of our community and in line with our mission."
The 59 1/2 Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival Pocket Sized Edition will allow for the same great features of the 2020 Global Digital Festival, from digital campfires and campsites to crafts and festival merch all online! Additional acts and partners will be announced for the digital stages shortly, and digital tickets are available for purchase now. Digital ticket holders have access to all stages through August 31 plus access to the PFS archives for the entire month of August.
