Vaccines Required for Healthcare Worker + Colleges; Wawa Clerk Stabs Attacker; Hit + Run Mother Dies

Officials announced on Friday morning, 8/13, that all Philadelphia health care workers and all students, faculty, and staff at city colleges and universities must be vaccinated by October 15. Acting Health Secretary Dr. Cheryl Bettigole said, "These regulations are aimed at protecting the most vulnerable through the vaccination of health care workers, and they're aimed at preventing the further spread of COVID-19 through the vaccination of college and university students, understanding that young adults are the population with the lowest vaccination rate and the highest rate of COVID-19 vaccination." Medical or religious exemptions may be granted. Health care workers with an exemption will be required to take an antigen test twice a week or a PCR test once a week. Those with exemptions at colleges and universities have the same option of testing. If 90% of the school is vaccinated, they have the option to double mask and maintain 6-feet social distance indoors. Schools can also choose to offer a virtual option to those with exemptions, if feasible.

Bettigole also announced a change to the indoor mask mandate announced on Wednesday, 8/11. Currently, businesses can either require everyone to be vaccinated or must require everyone to wear a mask. Children under 12 cannot get vaccinated and would be shut out of any business that requires one. The change creates a category of essential businesses that cannot require vaccinations. These include grocery stores, pharmacies, doctors' offices, and urgent care centers. Masks would be required in those establishments. Bettigole credits input from the public for the change.

A Wawa employee defended himself by stabbing an irate customer who came at him with a knife on Thursday night, 8/12. It happened around 10:30 p.m. on the on the 7200 block of Germantown Avenue in Mount Airy. A 42-year-old male customer became frustrated that he wasn't being waited on quickly enough. He began yelling at an employee unpacking boxes. The customer then pulled out a knife and went after the employee. The Wawa employee also had a knife/box cutter and stabbed the man in the abdomen/chest. The man was taken to Einstein Medical Center in critical condition. No charges are expected for the employee because he acted in self-defense.

A 37-year-old mother who was struck by a hit-and-run driver while walking her 3-year-old son in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia last weekend has now died from her injuries. Rebecca "Becky" Malave had been on life support in a coma, but passed away on Thursday night at Temple University Hospital, according to her sister Lorraine Graulau. It happened around 8 p.m. Sunday, 8/8, under an overpass on the 100 block of West Luzerne Street, between Rising Sun Avenue and American Street. Malave and her son Armani Negron were about two blocks from their home when they were hit. A Good Samaritan on a motorcycle rushed the boy to the hospital. He remains in critical but stable condition at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. Captain Mark Overwise, commanding officer of the Philadelphia Police Department's Accident Investigation Division, says that block does not have surveillance cameras.
