Philadelphia Announces New Mask/Vaccine Mandates; DE School Masks; Excessive Heat Warning

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Cheryl Bettigole announced new coronavirus COVID-19 mitigation restrictions for city businesses and city workers on Wednesday, 8/11. Cases are rising again in the area due to the more contagious delta variant and a continued large unvaccinated population. The best way to fight the virus is to get vaccinated.

Starting at 12:01 a.m. August 12, masks will be required indoors at any business, restaurant, or institution for employees and patrons regardless of vaccination status. However, if the business or institution requires everyone to be vaccinated, then masks are not required. Masks will be required at any non-seated outdoor event with more than 1,000 attendees.

All city employees must be vaccinated by September 1, or they will be required to double-mask when working. All new hires will be required to be vaccinated as a condition of their employment.

"The updated policies we announced today are critical to slowing the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19, which is more dangerous and transmissible than earlier forms of the virus," said Mayor Jim Kenney. "The science is clear: these measures will protect Philadelphians and save lives. We strongly urge everyone who has not yet received the vaccine to get it immediately; it is the best and safest way we can get through this deadly and unpredictable pandemic. We flattened the curve before and we must do everything in our power to do it again."

Delaware Governor John Carney announced on Tuesday, 8/10, that all students, teachers, and staff in both public and private school will be required to wear masks in school. The mandate goes into effect on Monday, August 16, regardless of vaccination status. "There's no higher priority than getting all Delaware children back in their classrooms full-time this fall," Carney said in a news release. "This consistent, statewide approach will help students, educators and staff return to school safely and without disruption."

Effective August 16, face coverings will be required indoors for all individuals kindergarten-age and up at:

â€” Child care homes & centers
â€” State facilities

An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect now through Friday, 8/13, at 8 p.m. in the Philadelphia area. High temperatures will reach the mid-upper 90's Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The heat index will soar to 100-110. Thursday will be the hottest day. Avoid strenuous work outside during the middle of the day. Drink plenty of water. Check on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly and children. Do not leave anyone unattended inside a vehicle. There is a chance of a pop-up thunderstorm.
