Anna Verna, First Woman Council President, Passes; PPD Use Of Force Reform; Great White Caught in NJ

Anna Verna, the first and only female president of Philadelphia City Council, has passed away at age 90. Verna was first elected to City Council in 1975 and succeeded her father in the 2nd District in South Philadelphia and Center City. Verna became president in 1999. She retired after serving 36 years in office. Current Council President Darryl Clarke succeeded her in 2012.

The Pathways to Reform, Transformation and Reconciliation Group released a 1-year update on its work with "institutions, departments, and community leaders, and organizations to enact a meaningful reform agenda, reimagine public safety, and advance racial justice." The initiative is supported by a 48 member diverse Steering Committee. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw outlined reforms to the police department's use of force policies. "Our policy on chokeholds previously banned was updated in June of 2020 to explicitly prohibit sitting or kneeling on a person's neck, face, or head. PPD banned all use of tear gas for non-violent demonstrations. No-knock warrant entries of any kind are prohibited," Outlaw said on Tuesday, 6/15. These reforms were made in response to calls for justice and police reform amid protest and civil unrest over last summer. The Steering Committee has made progress in other areas like the economy, community, and health.

A couple of sport fisherman made the catch of a lifetime over the weekend in New Jersey. The boat was about a mile off shore from Seaside Heights on Sunday afternoon, 6/13, in about 50 feet of water when they caught a young great white shark. The fisherman reeled it in close to the boat before cutting it loose. They believe it was around 7 feet long and weighed about 110 pounds. Researchers say a young shark is a sign the ocean is healthy. Beachgoers do not need to worry. Encounters with sharks are extremely rare.

Philadelphia Flyers' Oskar Lindblom has won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. It was announced on Tuesday night, 6/15. Lindblom was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma in December 2019. He underwent cancer treatment for many months and eventually played two games in the bubble playoffs in September 2020. 24-year-old Lindblom returned to the Flyers' lineup this season.
