Fire at Normandy Farms in Montco; Penn Relays '21 Canceled; Nova's Collin Gillespie Out, MCL Tear

A large fire broke out a popular wedding venue, hotel, and hospitality center in Montgomery County on Thursday night, 3/4. Firefighters were called around 8 p.m. to the historic Normandy Farm Hotel & Conference Center on the 1400 block of Morris Road in Blue Bell. The property dates back to the early 1700s. Heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from one of the buildings. Firefighters were able to bring it under control by 9:30 p.m. No one was injured. Owners say that it was contained to one building that has 9 rooms. "That building dates back to 1800s. It was the original carriage house for when this was just an inn," said owner Bud Hansen. They will be open on Friday, 3/5. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters did make some unusual rescues. A bride and wedding party were staying at the hotel ahead of the ceremony scheduled for Friday, 3/5. They were having dinner in a different building when the fire broke out. The bride came running telling the firefighters that her wedding dress, bridesmaids dresses, suits, etc. were inside a room in the burning building. Everything was rescued and the wedding will go on as planned.

The University of Pennsylvania Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Thursday, 3/5, that there will not be a traditional Penn Relays this April 22-24. This is the second year in a row that the famous track meet has been canceled due to coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic concerns. If, however, health conditions continue to improve, Penn Relays officials say they may host a local collegiate-only track and field meet on Saturday, April 24. They are also looking into holding an open/professional meet and a scholastic meet sometime this summer.

"It is disappointing that we once again have to cancel one of the landmark events of the spring in Philadelphia and in track and field, but collectively we want to ensure the safety of our athletes, campus, community, and spectators," said Dr. M. Grace Calhoun, the T. Gibbs Kane, Jr. W'69 Director of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Pennsylvania.

Villanova Wildcats senior point guard Collin Gillespie will be out for the rest of the season with a torn MCL. Gillespie hurt his knee in the first half of Wednesday night's win over Creighton. An MRI on Thursday confirmed the tear. Gillespie had recently been named one of five finalists for the Bob Cousy award, which goes to the nation's best point guard. The Wildcats clinched their 7th regular season Big East title in the past 8 years with that win. They play Providence on Saturday for the last game of the season. The Big East tournament starts next week in Madison Square Garden.
