Hallahan Girls Walkout to Protest Closure; Winery Barn Burns in MontCo; New Jersey Vaccine Plans

Students at John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls' High School in Philadelphia staged a walkout Friday morning, 11/20. The demonstration is in response to the announcement by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia earlier this week that the high school will be closed at the end of this academic year. Bishop McDevitt High School will also be closed. Hundreds of students left the school located on 19th Street between Vine and Callowhill in Center City around 10 a.m. and walked a few blocks to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia headquarters near 17th and Race. The girls paused in front of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul to kneel and pray. Hallahan was founded in 1911. It is the first all-girl's catholic high school in the country. The decision to close both schools follows a 7-month long study of the financial stability of all of the Archdiocese's secondary schools. These two schools are operating at 40% and lower enrollment and dropping. Students will receive assistance transferring to another school. Alumni and others wish they had known sooner that the schools were in jeopardy and could have organized to save them.

A large fire destroyed a barn under construction at a popular winery in Montgomery County on Friday morning, 11/20. It happened just before 6 a.m. at the Karamoor Estate Vineyard & Winery on the 6100 block of Butler Pike in Fort Washington. Multiple fire crews responded to the blaze. Heavy fire and smoke poured from the building. It is owned by philanthropists Nick and Athena Karabots. They were turning the barn into a wine bar and tasting room. The stone exterior remains, but the interior was destroyed. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Whitemarsh Township Fire Marshalâ€™s Office.

New Jersey officials say they expect to receive their first shipments of vaccines by the middle of December if they are approved by the FDA. Those first doses would go to vaccinating health care professionals and first responders. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two doses given several weeks apart. Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli said Friday that Pfizer would be sending two batches of 130,000 units. Those doses are given 21 days apart. Moderna would be sending two batches of 100,000 units. Those doses are delivered 28 days apart. The vaccine will not widely be available to the general public in New Jersey until April or May. Persichilli says the state's plan is to immunize 4.7 million people, or 70% of NJ's population, within 6 months.

New Jersey could receive its first shipment of vaccines in late December.
