U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died at age 87 on Friday, 9/18. She was surrounded by family members at her home in Washington, D.C. The Supreme Court announced her death saying it was from complications with metastatic pancreatic cancer. "Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature," Chief Justice John Roberts said. "We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tired and resolute champion of justice." Ginsburg was nominated to the Supreme Court in 1993 by President Bill Clinton and became the second woman to sit on the high court. Over the years, she was a staunch defender of women's rights. In her later years, as her health declined, it was not uncommon for Ginsberg to continue to participate in court arguments and proceedings from her hospital bed over the phone.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was honored with the 32nd Annual Liberty Medal from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on Thursday, September 17.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell released a statement which read in part, "The Senate and the nation mourn the sudden passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the conclusion of her extraordinary American life...Her intelligence and determination earned her respect and admiration throughout the legal world, and indeed throughout the entire nation, which now grieves alongside her family, friends, and colleagues." It concluded, “President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate."
