Jamie Moyer, 49, Named To Colorado Rockies Starting Rotation

Former Phillie and Souderton, PA native, Jamie Moyer, has proven once again that he is above the odds, the definition of determination, even if he defies logic at times. At 49, Moyer spent the entire 2011 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. This past January he signed a Minor League contract with the Colorado Rockies and went into Spring Training having to win his way onto the team.

Today, Rockies manager Jim Tracy announced that Moyer would be in the club's starting rotation in the number 2 spot. That's a far cry from just making the 40-man roster. Moyer had a terrific spring going 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA in four Cactus League appearances. He also doesn't seem to be bothered by his injury and has bounced back after his longer outings, which gave Tracy more confidence in the veteran.

We know Jaime's strengths when he's on the mound and his age may or may not have anything to do with his success. The speed or lack there of his fastball in the 70's may hurt or help. Moyer pitched for 6 years before the Rockies even existed and he never threw extremely hard.

"Age really doesn't have a bearing on anything," Moyer said after his last start on Wednesday. "If age had a bearing on this, I wouldn't be doing it. It's based on how I feel. It's the best way I can explain it."

His age may not have as much to do with how his body is working, but it does have everything to do with what he knows about pitching and the game of baseball. When he is on that mound he knows where and when to place those slower pitches to get batters out. That wisdom and experience is invaluable and unique to Moyer.

"I think he can still be very, very effective," Tracy added. "He has incredible know-how, he's an incredible pitch-maker. When he's right he can carve a strike zone up. He has a great understanding as to how to keep the ball off the barrel of the bat."

His first start is April 7 in Houston. His first win this year will make Moyer the oldest pitcher to ever record a Major League victory.
