Glen Mills Turned into FEMA Site; Temple Lends Liacouras to City; Sea Isle Closes Beach/Promenade

The closed Glen Mills School in Delaware County will be turned into a FEMA medical center to treat coronavirus COVID-19 patients. A Federal Medical Station will be set up in the school's recreation center which is around 86,000 square feet. It will be used for surge capacity. The school also has medical and dental facilities, a generator, and even an airfield on its 800-acre campus. "I'm proud to have led the Congressional effort to ask FEMA to designate Glen Mills Schools as a Federal Medical Station and glad to see that the request has been approved. As our region faces the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, we need as many federal resources as possible to save lives and help our health care workers. We are hopeful that the new facility at Glen Mills will provide much needed medical support to our constituents," Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon said.

The City of Philadelphia has reached an agreement with Temple University to use the Liacouras Center and other university facilities as surge hospital capacity for overflow coronavirus COVID-19 patients. PEMA will start to bring in the necessary equipment to built up the facility in the coming days. The city will continue to look for other spaces to use. When asked how much Temple is charging the city for the use of the Liacouras Center, Mayor Kenney said, "We're very Temple proud," insinuating they aren't being charged.

The mayor of Sea Isle City, New Jersey, has announced that the Promenade and beaches are now closed effective immediately due to the coronavirus outbreak. Mayor Leonard Desiderio says they will remain closed until further notice. For more information go to: http://www.seaislecitynj.us

"Sea Isle City's beach and promenade are our greatest attraction, and as such are a prime spot for social gatherings, that we've been ordered by Governor Murphy to stop," said the Mayor.Â "Our challenge in local government is to take the necessary steps to ensure that we enable everyone to comply with the governor's orders not to have social gatherings and to maintain proper social distancing."

"While we understand that the beaches and promenade are desirable locations for permitted activities, such as running and walking, we must consider the potential for unnecessary close contact occurring," added the Mayor. "Accordingly, the City is closing all beaches and the promenade to public access, effective immediately. We understand this may be an inconvenience to some folks, but please know that this measure is being taken for the health and safety of everyone."
