Around 1,000 contract workers at Philadelphia International Airport are expected to be laid off in the coming days due to coronavirus COVID-19. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) says workers will get notices between Thursday and Monday as part of a 'massive layoff.' The workers are contracted by companies and perform jobs such as cabin cleaners, wheelchair aides, line queuers, and curbside skycaps.
SEPTA announced today that starting Sunday, March 22, All Transit service will start operating on a Saturday schedule, everyday until further notice. That includes Bus, Trolley, Trackless Trolley, Market Frankford Line, Broad Street Line, and Norristown High Speed Line. The two subway lines will also operate all-night train service. Regional Rail has already started to run on an Enhanced Saturday Schedule. Transit ridership has declined approximately 60 percent and Regional Rail is down 80 percent considering people are staying home and not going in to work.
Philadelphia officials announced a new fund aimed at aiding area non-profits that "provide support to our most vulnerable neighbors" during the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. Many non-profits are on the front lines of the Greater Philadelphia area, but are being strained financially during this crisis while trying to serve the community and their missions. "This fund will rapidly provide grants to Greater Philadelphia organizations with a successful track record of serving at-risk populations such as the elderly, disabled, homeless and economically disadvantaged and will shore up community safety nets such as food pantries and health services, as well as help with preparedness and protection such as hygiene supplies, access to accurate current information, and available services." The United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey and the Philadelphia Foundation will be managing the the PHL COVID-19 Fund and 100% of donations will go towards to non-profits. The fund will serve 501(c)(3) non-profits in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania and Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland counties in New Jersey.
