Philadelphia Archdiocese/Camden Diocese Cancel Mass; PPA Suspends Meters; Eagles Cut Malcolm Jenkins

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Diocese of Camden have each suspended public weekday and Sunday masses until further notice. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia's cancelation begins at noon on Wednesday, 3/18, while the Diocese of Camden's begins on Tuesday, 3/17. Priests will still celebrate daily mass privately and honor all requested Mass intentions. The sacraments of Baptism, Confession, Marriage, and Funerals will still be available in the church while paying attention to the limitations on crowd size and social distancing. Priests will still perform Anointing of the Sick for those in immediate danger of death, but visits to the sick or homebound with Holy Communion by priests, deacons, or extraordinary ministers are suspended. Plans for Holy Week in April will be announced at a later time. Archbishop Perez will continue to live stream Mass at 11 a.m. each Sunday. Philadelphia Archbishop Nelson PÃ©rez said, "As the Archbishop of Philadelphia, my first priority is to ensure the health and welfare of those entrusted to the pastoral and temporal care of our Church. So, in light of the developing Coronavirus pandemic, a decision has been made to suspend the public celebration of all Masses in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for the time being."

Camden Bishop Dennis Sullivan said, "As difficult as it seems right now, it is vitally important that the Catholic faithful follow the directives of the civil authorities related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The people of South Jersey and the world remain in my prayers."

The Philadelphia Parking Authority announced that it will be closing the Parking Violations Branch and PPA administrative offices starting March 17 and reopening March 30. Officials said that meters, kiosks, and residential parking time limits will not be enforced throughout the city. However, "the Philadelphia Parking Authority will place a special emphasis on enforcing safety violations, including blatant violations that pose a threat to public order and safety such as double-parking, loading zone violations, and blocking entranceways or crosswalks. It is essential that motorists park legally during this health crisis so as not to impede traffic flow or block emergency vehicle access." PPA parking garages and lots will remain open. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy orders the closure of all indoor shopping malls, amusement parks, and amusement centers starting 8 p.m. Tuesday, 3/17. Restaurants in those malls that have their own entrance can remain open for pick-up or delivery only.

The Philadelphia Eagles announced that they would not be picking up the 2020 option for safety Malcolm Jenkins. 32-year-old Jenkins played 6 of his 11 NFL seasons for the Eagles, winning a Super Bowl and making multiple Pro Bowls. The defensive captain was a leader off the field, heavily involved in activism in the community. Jenkins now becomes a free agent.

The Eagles did reportedly re-sign Jalen Mills to a one-year $5 million contract. Mills will move to play safety.
