A strong odor in Center City caused many people to evacuate their buildings on Monday morning, 3/2. The Philadelphia Fire Department cannot confirm initial reports that the odor came from the refinery. The cause of the odor remains undetermined. City officials had said that the odor was released during the cleaning of a tank at the former Philadelphia Energy Solutions site in South Philadelphia. They also said that there is no heath risk to the public. The substance supposedly released is called mercaptan and it is non-hazardous. Mercaptan is added to natural gas, which is odorless, to give it a foul smell. The refinery has been shutdown since an explosion and fire in June 2019. Fire officials will still investigate any reports of strong odor in case there is a gas leak.

A 29-year-old woman was struck and killed by multiple vehicles on Route 1 in Bucks County early Monday morning, 3/2. It happened around 3:30 a.m. on the southbound side between Township Road and the Neshaminy exit. Police say she was either walking along the highway or trying to cross when she was struck. None of the striking vehicles stopped. Police are investigating this as a hit-and-run. Route 1 was closed off in both directions for several hours. If you have any information, contact police at 215-750-3800.

UPDATE: Around 8:30 a.m., a passerby discovered a severed human left arm and hand on the side of the road on the 8800 block of Pine Road in the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia. Police believe that the arm came from the hit-and-run victim in Bucks County and was probably transported on one of the hit-and-run vehicles. The two locations are approximately 7 miles apart.

A man was critically wounded after being stabbed in a Center City homeless shelter on Monday afternoon, 3/2. It happened around 12:30 p.m. at St. John's Hospice on the 1200 block of Race Street. The victim, a man in his 20's, was stabbed four times in the back. He was taken to Jefferson Hospital in critical condition. An arrest has been made. No word on what led up to the stabbing.
