Punxsutawney Phil Does Not See His Shadow, Predicts An Early Spring! Groundhog Day 02/02/2020

Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his lair on top of Gobbler's Knob in the tiny town 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh at 7:26 a.m. Sunday, 02/02/2020, and did not see his shadow. The furry prognosticator told the thousands of onlookers (through his top hat handlers called the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle) that we should expect an early spring! According to legend, if it is sunny and the groundhog sees his shadow he'll become frightened and run back in his burrow, signifying winter will continue for six more weeks. If it is cloudy, then no shadow and he'll stay outside for an early spring. Phil has only predicted an early spring 20 times in the 134-year history of Groundhog Day. This year marks the first time he hasn't seen his shadow two years in a row. (see all-time records)

Phil's official proclamation this Groundhog Day:

"It's a Phil-phantastic day
in these beautiful woods,
with thousands and thousands
in the Knob neighborhood.

You faithful followers
are the best, it's true.
Who wouldn't want neighbors
just like you?

Now my forecast on a day
that is a palindrome
will cause some to cheer
and some to moan.

So do I hope you think it's neighborly
for there is no shadow of me.
Spring will be early,
it's a certainty."
