Chester Teen Who Shot 79yo In Custody; Crossing Guard Crash Arrest; City of Sisterly Love Nickname

The teenage boy wanted in the shooting death of a grandfather in Chester has been taken into custody after surrendering to police on Friday afternoon, 1/31. 14-year-old Zhafir Tinsley-Jones is charged with the murder of 79-year-old Robert Womack. It happened on Wednesday 1/29 around 5 p.m. at 3rd Street and Highland Avenue. Womack was driving when he was shot in the back of the head. He drove several more blocks before crashing at 3rd and Wilcox Streets in Trainer. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Philadelphia Police have arrested one man involved in an accident that injured a crossing guard in Port Richmond on Tuesday afternoon, 1/28. 35-year-old Joseph Herron is charged with aggravated assault while driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, and other offenses. It happened at the intersection of Allegheny Avenue and Cedar Street. Herron was driving a red Nissan Versa. He was traveling on Allegheny Avenue and ran the red light at Cedar Street. He was struck by a red Ford Expedition and then spun into the 61-year-old cross guard who was in the cross walk. Herron did remain at the scene, but the driver of the Expedition did not. Police are looking for them. The crossing guard is recovering from serious injuries.

Philadelphia City Council voted on a resolution on Thursday, 1/30, to change the city's nickname to the City of Sisterly Love until the end of 2020. The honorary nickname is in honor of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. The 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote. It was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920. Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson introduced the resolution. The change was made in part with Visit Philadelphia who will be promoting it throughout the year. The City of Brotherly Love is less a 'nickname' than a literal translation of 'Philadelphia' from Greek. 'Phila' comes from phileo meaning "to love." 'Delphia' comes from adelphos meaning "brother." It could also translate to adelfÃ meaning "sister." The city's motto has also been known as the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. Former Mayor Michael Nutter included it in a proclamation in 2014, but it has been used as far back as the late 1800s.
