The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has taken the recommendations of it's 16-member blue-ribbon commission's year long review into the region's Catholic education into closed meetings this morning. They are to decide on the fate of the 156 elementary schools, 17 high schools, and 4 special eduction schools. The expectation is that as many as 40 elementary schools and 4 high schools could be closed this year.
Declining enrollments, rising tuitions, and family's moving to outer suburbs have played a factor in reevaluating how the Archdiocese handles Catholic education and manages it's vast school system.
The archdiocese has 49,177 students in elementary schools, 15,172 students at high schools, and 212 students at special-education schools.
The Archdiocese will address the public with it's decisions today at 4pm. This has caused much panic and anxiety amoung students, parents, and alumni, wondering if their school may be one to close, and if they may have to go elsewhere next year. The blue-ribbon commission report will be available here at 4 pm as well : http://www.faithinthefuture.com/
