The Philadelphia Union have now signed veteran defender Oguchi Onyewu for the start of their 2017 season. Onyewu has been signed on as a discovery signing, he has had vast experience playing for the top clubs in Europe, as well as representing the United States in the World Cup in 2006 and 2010. Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart stated "Oguchi is a big, physical presence who brings experience and veteran professionalism, important traits that we believe will be an asset for our group of young defenders, he provides excellent depth at the center-back position and we are pleased that we were able to add him to our squad."

In a new ranking by WalletHub.com, who compared 244 cities in the United States with at least one college football or professional football team in the city, ranked Philadelphia No. 7 football city in America. Ahead of Philadelphia was Green Bay, Pittsburgh, New York, Dallas, Boston, and Seattle. Last year Philadelphia was ranked No. 9. Philadelphia, however, was ranked as having the 4th least accessible stadium in the country. State College was ranked the 5th most friendly and engaged college football fans in the county.

Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds was named the NHL All-Star MVP after his outstanding performance in the NHL All-Star game which took place this past Sunday. Simmonds was able to score the tie-breaking goal for the Metropolitan Division team to secure a 4-3 victory over the Pacific Division team. The tie-breaking goal scored by Simmonds marked a hat trick for the MVP. The winning Metropolitan team won a $1 million prize to be split among the 11 man team.
