Tom Ridge Considered to be Next Penn State President

According to ESPN former PA Governor Tom Ridge could be the next Penn State president. In the fallout of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal, many expect current PSU president Graham Spanier to lose his job. Penn State's Board of Trustees is said to be weighing the possibility of having Ridge replace Spanier. So far no one at Penn State has offered a clear explanation as to why university officials didn't report allegations of child sexual abuse to law enforcement authorities.

Pennsylvania State University head football coach Joe Paterno and president Graham B. Spanier were fired Wednesday, toppled by questions and withering criticism over the way they handled allegations of child sex-abuse by a former coach.

Paterno had announced earlier in the day that he would retire at the end of the current season, his 46th as head coach. But university trustees decided he could not stay.

The developments marked a spectacular and swift downfall for both men, but it was the coach, not his boss, who over decades had come to embody the institution.

No Division I-A coach has more wins than Paterno, a fall fixture for the legions at packed Beaver Stadium and generations of college football fans across the country.

Ultimately, neither he nor Spanier could withstand the backlash that started when longtime defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was charged Saturday with molesting eight boys, and two administrators were accused of covering up one of his assaults.

Paterno and Spanier were not charged, but became targets of relentless criticism that they ignored or failed to act on troubling signs about Sandusky's conduct.

Penn State has fired football coach Joe Paterno and president Graham Spanier over their roles in the allegations of child sex-abuse by former defensive coach Jerry Sandusky. Paterno had announced that he would retire at the end of the current season, his 46th as head coach. But university trustees decided he could not stay. After the announcement, riots broke out on campus mostly in support of Coach Joe Pa. As the team finishes its season without Paterno, the investigation will focus on â€œwho knew what and when?â€.
