| MTV Video Music Awards Celebrates Music Videos on Channel for at least One Night |

The MTV Video Music Awards may seem like a contradiction or at least ingenuine for a channel that doesn't play videos anymore and furthermore doesn't have VJs that can serve as the face of the station at the awards. In this, the channel's 30th year, reality programming is wall to wall, and music is no where to be found. Instead music fans turn elsewhere for the medium MTV heralded for years. They've watched all these nominated videos and they've become hits on websites like youtube. Artists who might not have spent the money to make videos before because of the slim chance of getting into rotation on MTV, even in its music video heyday of the 80's and 90's, are now producing videos again because of the ease of being seen on the internet and the chance of becoming a hit.
Despite not playing videos, MTV is still a cultural style leader and icon maker, and put on it's annual VMA show tonight with a stack of Moon Men to hand out.
Here are the highlights, lowlights, surprises, and random notes:
Even before the show got started we found out that Beyonce is pregnant. She showed off her baby bump on the "black" carpet. It's the first child for her and husband Jay-Z. They got married in 2008. She'll be 30 in October.
Last Gaga was the opening performance coming out in menswear smoking and swearing as her alter ego Jo Calderone. She started with a performance art monologue that left many of the audience looking on with confused faces before sitting down at the piano and playing "You and I" with Brian May of Queen as a guest of guitar.
Other performances of the night came from Jay-z and Kanye West, Pitbull and Ne-yo, Adele, Chris Brown, Beyonce, Young My Giant, and Lil Wayne. Most were par for the course, except for maybe Chris Brown's performance. There was lots of OK dancing and some obvious wire assisted high flying, but Milli Vanilli hid lip-syncing better than Brown.
Lady Gaga presented Video Vanguard to Britney Spears (still in her man character). She praised Spears as one of her inspirations (Gaga is about 5 years her junior), even getting vulgar in character explaining how 'he' had posters of her all on the walls and would tough himself. There was a montage of Spears' iconic videos along with live dancers dressed in the same costumes as the video. The dancers were a mix of adult and children, with the montage ending with all child dancers. As Gaga presented the award 'he' and Spears had an awkward moment as 'he' gave her looks trying to get a kiss, though it didn't happen.
The Amy Winehouse tribute acknowledging her enormous talent, her widespread impact on the music world, and the tragic loss of her life earlier this summer was led by Russell Brand. Tony Bennett gave his tribute as well, comparing her talent as true jazz singer like the all time great female singers and sharing some of the recording sessions from his duet with Winehouse. Bruno Mars performed "Valerie".

Best New Artist: Tyler The Creator "Yonkers"
Video of the Year: Katy Perry "Firework"
