The Vault at Vinyl Revival in Lansdowne hosted a concert that turned out to be something very special. The performers were Third Man In. They usually are an acoustic band performing new and old classic rock. They actually performed 9 or so songs using that platform. In this format you have Jim on guitar and lead vocals, Joe on key bass, organ and backing vocals and Bill on congas. This is a family affair they are all Cincotta's.

The 1st set was acoustic and WOW so very wonderful. Third Man In was faithful to the original songs yet with their own spin. The variety of the set was impressive from “A Day In The Life” to “Folsom Prison Blues.” Doing a cover of “A Day In The Life” is at best a high wire act without a net. The Flying Wallandas Family move over Third Man In blew the doors off the vault with this Beatles classic. The guitar work was expansive, the organ and bass provided the distortion the song demands and the congas a cherry on the top of the parfait.

Now comes something exceptional, Third Man In performed The Doors entire debut album. They added a drummer, John Cannon, to round out the band. John had all the spots mastered, the soft cymbals of “The Crystal Ship” to the pounding of “Break On Through.” Jim, that is Jim Cincotta's, voice was enough like Mister Jim's to capture your ear yet he lent a little of his own to each song. I thought he was generally awesome, but on “Twenty Century Fox” and yes “Light My Fire” it was just eerie and spooky, Jim really got inside of Jim!!! The range of the emotions and vocals made for a top flight musical experience.

In my opinion, the organ/keyboard portion of The Doors' music, played by the great Ray Manzerak, is unmistakable. You can hear pick out that Vox combo organ on the 1st note. Joe brought Ray back to the stage with his nimble and soulful interpretation of Ray's style and The Doors music. Needless to say “Light My Fire' and “Wiskey Bar” were the test for Joe. His fingers were like the songs, on fire. Joe's organ and piano bass were pitch perfect, pumping and grinding their way through that historic 1st album of The Doors.

The percussion was supplied by Bill on congas and John on drums. The combo was both unusual and extremely pleasing. The percussion in all Doors' music is a combination of restraint/subditley and over the waterfalls thunder. From “The End'' to “Twenty Century Fox” these guys got it very right. I could hear John Paul Densmore caress the cymbal on “The End.”

Jim also played lead guitar with both skill and passion. He worked the frets and strings like a man possessed. He showed all he had on “Into The Mystic, “ “Soul Kitchen” and “Johnny B. Goode.” He was faithful to the originals, but layered his own hard nose style to the mix.

It was quite a night. Third Man In did 22 Doors songs and 11 other remarkable covers ranging from stuff by Weezer to Bruce. You can follow them on Facebook and see them on Saturday Dec. 20th at Dukes in Springfield and on Feb. 7th at Pogue Mahone's in Prospect Park.
